Mission
To improve the productivity of members in the group by providing support and accountability while dissertating.
What it will look like
- A small group of Ph.D. students meeting together for 1 hour a week
- Each person shares what they accomplished during the past week and their goals for the next week
- If there is time after sharing goals & accomplishments, the group can:
- Share ideas about time management and motivation
- Share frustrations that have come up and brainstorm ways of dealing with them
What it will NOT look like
Graduate students critiquing each other's work. (Although any two members can set aside time outside the group to do this). Keep in mind that there may be Ph.D. students from completely different fields (e.g. English & engineering) in the group together
Why?
Job search accountability groups have been helpful to people between jobs. The same principals apply in the dissertation phase of Ph.D. programs. After all, there are a lot of similarities in terms of the self-paced, self-motivated nature of both job searches and dissertation work.

Note
This is not a "Christians-only" support group, and is open to all Ph.D. students. There will be no prayer and no explicit Christian teaching. Veritas Graduate Christian group is simply providing resources and supporting dissertation support groups, not imposing anything on them.
There are a number of department/field specific prayer groups in Veritas. If you are interested in starting up a prayer group associated with your field - please do! Send alexander.grutter (at) gmail.com an e-mail with your prayer group's information to update this page.
Though initially started as a prayer group for the physics department, the group has expanded to include members from other physical sciences as well as engineering. Our meeting time changes every semester, depending on people's availability; we generally meet for an hour around lunch time on the Campanile lawn. We spend some time sharing our praises and prayers with one another and then enter a time of prayer for each other, our departments, our community and the world.
